CROMWELL, Conn. — Tommy Fleetwood showcased impressive skill during the Travelers Championship, finishing with an outstanding 7-under 63 and not missing a single fairway throughout his round. Meanwhile, his fellow competitors Scottie Scheffler and Justin Thomas struggled significantly behind him.
The trio began a hot Saturday all tied for the lead, but that quickly changed. Scheffler, celebrating his 29th birthday, faced a tough start with a triple bogey—a first in his PGA Tour career. A missed fairway led him into thick rough, followed by a challenging bunker shot that ultimately resulted in a disappointing 72, putting him nine shots behind.
Thomas, still in contention earlier, found himself in trouble at the par-5 13th hole when he lost his driver, sending it off course. After regrouping, he managed to post a score of 73, leaving him 10 shots off the lead.
In contrast, Fleetwood’s smooth play allowed him to pull ahead with a three-shot lead. With a remarkable record that includes seven titles on the European Tour and multiple Ryder Cup appearances, winning a PGA Tour event is a significant goal for him.
"I’m proud of my stats, even though I haven’t secured a win yet. It’s something every golfer wishes for, and this is my first real opportunity this year," he admitted excitedly.
Fleetwood faces strong challengers at TPC River Highlands, notably Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley, who shot a 63, and Russell Henley, who posted an impressive 61 the day after self-reporting a penalty during his play.
Henley, reflecting on his decision to call the penalty, stated, “It was a surprise. I knew I had to do the right thing when I felt the ball move.”
Tragically absent from contention are Scheffler and Thomas, both of whom faltered with 5-over-par scores on a day that was calm but sweltering, leading to an average score of 68 for the field.
Fleetwood continued to shine, only missing three greens and maintaining a remarkable 32-hole bogey-free streak leading into Sunday. A notable eagle on the 13th hole not only boosted his chances but allowed him to widen the gap between himself and the chasing pack.
At 16-under 194, Fleetwood has consistently placed in the top 20 in many outings this season but has been striving for more significant success.
Jason Day managed a strong finish with three birdies in a row, ending with a score of 67 and placing him five shots back. Meanwhile, Scheffler encountered an unexpected challenge early in his round, which ultimately derailed his competition.
Bradley, who won the Travelers two years ago, feels the energy of the New England fans cheering him on, which adds to the excitement of the tournament. “I know I have to shoot in the mid-60s to stay competitive, but this course is challenging and makes you think differently,” he explained.
As the tournament progresses, all eyes remain on Fleetwood as he seeks to secure his first PGA Tour title.
