A woman in New York is in trouble with the law after she allegedly shot her neighbor with a flare gun. This happened after the two got into an argument in their retirement community on Long Island.
Kathleen Schuman, who is 76 years old, has been charged with hurting someone with a weapon. Court records show she said she wasn’t guilty. Her next court date is set for September 12.
Police say the incident took place on Monday, September 8, in West Babylon, New York.
The neighbor, who is 67 years old, reportedly needed six stitches on his face because of the flare gun. People who live nearby say the trouble started because the two neighbors had problems with each other’s pets.
Both the man and the woman live in a retirement community for people over 55. After the incident, both of them were taken to the hospital to get checked out, but their injuries weren’t life-threatening, according to the police.
Video footage shows the man walking his dog when a woman fires a flare gun at him.
The man then chased after her, grabbed her hair, and hit her in the head.
The man told news reporters that he wanted to protect himself and his dog.
Another neighbor said that the man had been bothering the woman because he didn’t like her cat. She had even moved away for a few months because of it, but the man kept bothering her after she moved back.
The company that manages the retirement community said they are aware of the situation and are working with the police. They also said that the safety of their residents is their main concern.
Schuman is saying she didn’t do it. A judge has told her to stay away from the man and has set her bail at $5,000.
