An Air Canada flight faced a harrowing incident while landing in Nova Scotia over the weekend.
On Saturday evening, December 28, around 9:30 PM local time, Air Canada Express Flight 2259 made a rough landing at Halifax Stanfield International Airport. Reports indicate that the aircraft skidded down the runway, resulting in a fire starting in one of the wings.
According to Air Canada spokesperson Peter Fitzpatrick, the plane encountered what was described as a “suspected landing gear issue.” As a result, the aircraft could not proceed to the terminal, and the crew, along with 73 passengers, had to be bused to safety. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported.
Passengers are still waiting for their belongings since the plane remains under the control of the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) as they begin their investigation.
Halifax Stanfield Airport briefly closed its airfield following the incident. They stated that all passengers and crew were safely evacuated from the plane and taken off the airfield for assessment. One runway has since reopened, but travelers have been advised to check their flight status, as there may still be delays.
The airport’s emergency response team promptly attended to the situation, reassuring the public that safety remains their highest priority.
Witness accounts from passengers have highlighted the intensity of the event. One passenger recounted how the plane tilted dangerously to one side, causing noise and smoke to fill the cabin as it made contact with the runway.
As investigations continue, authorities remain dedicated to uncovering the causes of this alarming incident to ensure air travel safety for all.
