Three adults and two children were hospitalized due to a carbon monoxide leak at the Residence Inn Atlanta Downtown. The incident occurred early on Friday, January 3, prompting a swift response from the Atlanta Fire Rescue Department around 8:30 a.m.
Upon arrival, firefighters detected dangerously high levels of carbon monoxide inside the hotel. As a precaution, five people were taken to the hospital for observation, with one individual reportedly unconscious during transport.
Concerns arose when children in the hotel were found unresponsive, leading to an urgent call for help. The current condition of those hospitalized remains unclear.
The AFRD confirmed on social media that the gas line had been shut off and the immediate situation was stabilized. They completed a thorough search and evacuation of the building. The hotel, which has 20 stories and a total of 160 rooms, was occupied by around 100 guests at the time.
Assistance was provided to guests during the evacuation, with Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority busing individuals to safety as the firefighters managed the situation.
Hazmat teams were deployed to help residents experiencing symptoms from the carbon monoxide exposure while maintenance worked to identify the leak’s source.
A later update from AFRD indicated that carbon monoxide levels in the building had returned to a safe range, and Atlanta Gas was now involved to further address the situation.
The hotel is currently closed as authorities continue their investigation into the cause of the gas leak.
