Box Office Update: “Final Destination: Bloodlines” Dominates Weekend Sales
The recent release of “Final Destination: Bloodlines” has proven that the franchise is far from dead, coming in strong at the box office. The sixth installment of this popular horror series raked in an impressive $51 million during its opening weekend in the United States, according to studio estimates. With international sales matching domestic figures, the film achieved a remarkable $102 million worldwide debut.
In contrast, Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye’s experimental thriller, “Hurry Up Tomorrow,” struggled to make an impact, opening outside the top five with a mere $3.3 million in ticket sales. Senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian pointed out that the buzz around “Final Destination: Bloodlines” overshadowed other releases, making it a tough competition for newcomers.
“Final Destination: Bloodlines” debuted in 3,523 theaters and benefited from strong reviews, boasting a 93% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The marketing campaign effectively tapped into nostalgia, featuring imagery of logs on the backs of trucks, a nod to one of the franchise’s infamous scenes.
This latest success revitalizes a franchise that has been dormant since 2011 and continues a winning streak for Warner Bros., with other hits like “Sinners” and “A Minecraft Movie” also performing well.
Disney’s “Thunderbolts” followed in second place with $16.5 million, bringing its global revenue to over $325 million. “Sinners” took the third spot with $15.4 million, totaling $316.8 million worldwide, while “A Minecraft Movie” has made an astonishing $928.6 million globally, adding $5.9 million this weekend. The fifth position was occupied by Amazon MGM Studios’ “The Accountant 2.”
Meanwhile, “Hurry Up Tomorrow” struggled to resonate with audiences, earning a low 13% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a C- CinemaScore. Critics labeled it an ambitious project but criticized its storytelling and emotional depth. Despite its challenges, Lionsgate has reported that the film remains a profitable venture for them.
Looking ahead, next weekend may see a significant boost in theater attendance with the premieres of “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” and the live-action adaptation of “Lilo & Stitch.” The overall box office remains strong, currently up nearly 15% compared to last year.
Dergarabedian remarked that this weekend serves as a promising start to what could become a record-breaking Memorial Day weekend at the box office.
