Veteran Law Enforcement Officer Appointed as FBI Co-Deputy Director
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has announced the appointment of Christopher Raia, a seasoned law enforcement professional, as its new co-deputy director. This decision, made by FBI Director Kash Patel, follows the departure of Dan Bongino from the position. Raia, currently the head of the FBI’s New York City Field Office, is set to begin his new role in Washington, D.C.
Raia brings to the position over two decades of experience within the FBI. His extensive background is viewed as a valuable asset in maintaining the integrity and effectiveness of the agency.
Before joining the FBI, Raia graduated from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy and served as an officer in the Florida Coast Guard. This early commitment to public service reflects a dedication to upholding the law and protecting citizens.
Raia’s career with the FBI began in 2003 as a special agent in Texas. During his time there, he spent a decade investigating a range of criminal activities, including violent crime, gang activity, drug trafficking, and white-collar crime. He also served as the coordinator of the Safe Streets Task Force, demonstrating his commitment to community safety.
In 2012, Raia moved to the International Terrorism Operations Section of the FBI Headquarters’ Counterterrorism Division. There, he managed international terrorism cases across multiple field offices. This experience provided him with a broad understanding of national security challenges.
Raia’s career progression continued with promotions to senior supervisory resident agent and later to assistant special agent in charge. These roles allowed him to further develop his leadership skills and contribute to the FBI’s mission at various levels.
Before his appointment as co-deputy director, Raia served as the executive assistant director of the National Security Branch’s chief of staff and oversaw all international counterterrorism programs for the FBI as deputy assistant director of the Counterterrorism Division.
Bongino, Raia’s predecessor, had announced his departure from the role. Bongino, who previously served as a conservative commentator, was nominated for the position.
The appointment of Christopher Raia as co-deputy director signals a continued emphasis on experience and dedication within the FBI leadership. His extensive background in law enforcement and national security is expected to contribute to the agency’s ongoing efforts to protect the nation and uphold the rule of law. It is crucial that the FBI remains focused on its core mission of protecting American citizens and upholding the Constitution.
