Family of Idaho Murder Victim Upset Over Plea Deal
The family of one of the four University of Idaho students tragically killed is expressing strong discontent with the decision of prosecutors to offer a plea deal to the suspect, Bryan Kohberger.
Steve Goncalves, the father of Kaylee Goncalves, shared their frustration on social media, stating, "We are beyond furious at the State of Idaho. They have failed us."
Last week, the Goncalves family met with prosecutors regarding the possible plea deal, and they clearly communicated their rejection of the idea. However, over the weekend, prosecutors presented the plea deal without consulting them, raising alarm for the family.
Kohberger’s trial for the four murders was scheduled to begin shortly, but according to reports, he agreed to plead guilty to four counts of first-degree murder related to the deaths of Kaylee Goncalves, Xana Kernodle, Maddie Mogen, and Ethan Chapin, which occurred in November 2022. In exchange for the plea, he may avoid the death penalty but is expected to serve four life sentences consecutively.
A hearing is set for July 2, and if Kohberger pleads guilty, sentencing could take place later in the month.
Steve expressed his confusion and anger about the situation, stating, "We were not prepared for this — we had no idea that this was going to happen." He added, "It’s sad, it’s disgusting, and I can’t pretend like I feel like this is justice."
For the past two and a half years, the Goncalves family has relentlessly pursued answers about what occurred on that tragic night. They have taken on the responsibility of ensuring their daughter’s story is told and continue to seek accountability from law enforcement.
They expressed disappointment over the lack of communication from the prosecutors, mentioning that it felt like the conclusion of the case was being rushed without their input. They remain determined, stating, "We stand strong that it is not over until a plea is accepted. We will not stop fighting for the life that was stolen unjustly."
