Schaumburg Man Charged with Murdering Daughter-in-Law
A 76-year-old man from Illinois has been arrested for allegedly shooting his daughter-in-law outside a hotel after a family wedding. Roland Schmidt is facing charges of first-degree murder in the death of 45-year-old Christine Moyer.
According to local police, the tragic incident happened on July 25 outside a Marriott Hotel in Schaumburg. Reports indicate that Schmidt shot Moyer over divorce proceedings involving his son.
At a court hearing, prosecutors revealed that Schmidt had planned the murder for a week. They stated that he intended to take his own life after committing the act. “He executed her in the presence of her own family,” said Cook County Prosecutor Ellen Mandeltort, who ordered Schmidt to be held without bail.
Authorities arrived at the scene around 10:15 p.m. to find Moyer with a gunshot wound to the head. She was rushed to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital but unfortunately succumbed to her injuries.
After the shooting, Schmidt was subdued by a bystander and handed over to the police. Officers recovered a firearm from the scene. Witnesses reported that he had followed Moyer out of the hotel and shot her as she left.
Schmidt is set to appear in court again on August 22.
