New Labor and Delivery Unit Opening in Northeast Columbia This January
COLUMBIA, SC (WOLO) — Exciting news for expectant mothers in Northeast Columbia! A new Labor and Delivery Unit is set to open at MUSC Health Columbia Medical Center Northeast this coming January.
Located just off Farrow Road, the new unit comes in response to the rapid growth seen in the Northeast Columbia area. Chief Operating Officer Matthew Medley highlighted the area’s expansion, stating, “Northeast Columbia is growing at an extremely rapid pace, one of the highest rates in the country. We are investing in our community by opening a labor and delivery unit to meet both current and future needs.”
The new facility will boast a range of amenities, including a newborn nursery, four specialized labor and delivery rooms, and eight postpartum recovery rooms. These larger spaces aim to create a more comfortable and supportive atmosphere for families welcoming new arrivals.
OBGYN Dr. Todd Kraemer emphasized the benefits of having a facility closer to home, adding, “Some people want maybe a facility that feels a little more like an extension of their living room. Having healthcare that fits the patient’s taste and convenience is ideal.”
With its opening, the unit is expected to significantly reduce travel time for expecting mothers, allowing them to stay close to home during one of life’s most important experiences.
“This is an incredible place to be. It’s a special community, and we are thrilled to meet the needs of Northeast Columbia. When you walk in the door, our culture and facilities will welcome you and your family,” Medley remarked.
The new Labor and Delivery Unit is scheduled to open its doors in January 2025 and will be staffed by about six doctors and 40 nurses, ensuring quality care for families in the area.
