Former Federal Attorney Now Working for California Governor
Michele Beckwith, who used to be a top lawyer for the U.S. government in Sacramento, is now working for California Governor Gavin Newsom. The Trump administration let her go earlier this year.
Newsom has hired Beckwith to be a deputy legal affairs secretary. This means she will give legal advice to the governor and state groups, according to reports.
A spokesperson for Newsom said that Beckwith has a lot of legal experience and knowledge.
Beckwith told a newspaper that she thinks it’s important to protect our country’s democracy and Constitution.
Beckwith was fired after she disagreed with a Border Patrol leader about how to handle immigration arrests.
Reports say she told the Border Patrol that a court order limited their ability to arrest people without a good reason to suspect they broke federal laws. Shortly after she was fired, the Border Patrol carried out a raid and arrested several people for being in the U.S. illegally.
After Beckwith’s firing, Newsom’s team criticized the decision.
This move comes as Newsom and former President Trump have disagreed on several things, like immigration. The Department of Transportation recently said it would stop giving California $40 million because the state wasn’t following rules about English language skills for truck drivers.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said that California is the only state that doesn’t make sure truck drivers can read road signs and talk to law enforcement. He said this is a safety issue.
Recently, there have been several serious truck crashes involving illegal immigrants who got their driver’s licenses from California.
One recent crash involved Jashanpreet Singh, who is accused of driving under the influence and killing three people. The White House confirmed that Singh got his commercial driver’s license from California.
The White House press secretary said that the Department of Transportation is now being stricter about who gets these licenses because of a “worrying trend” of them being given to illegal immigrants.
