Former LAPD Officer Sentenced for Drunk Driving Crash
A former Los Angeles police officer, Edgar Verduzco, has been sentenced to 15 years to life in prison after pleading guilty to the murder of three family members in a drunk driving incident. The tragic event occurred on September 26, 2017, when Verduzco, who was driving at 150 miles per hour while under the influence, crashed into another vehicle on the 605 Freeway.
The accident claimed the lives of Mario Davila, 60, his wife Maribel, 52, and their 19-year-old son, Oscar. In addition to his murder charges, Verduzco was sentenced on July 18 to an additional three years in prison for driving under the influence and causing injury.
On the day of the incident, Verduzco collided with two cars, resulting in a devastating crash that led to one vehicle bursting into flames. A mother and her infant, who were in another car, suffered minor injuries in the accident.
L.A. District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman stated, “Mr. Verduzco knew the risks of driving under the influence, but his decision was fueled by recklessness and carelessness. This case serves as a reminder that drinking and driving is a choice that can lead to tragic outcomes.”
Discussing the impact on the Davila family, Hochman expressed his condolences, emphasizing that the loss of Oscar, a dedicated student at UC Riverside, and his parents has left a deep and irreplaceable grief for their loved ones.
