German Leader Champions European Strength, Transatlantic Ties
Berlin – German Chancellor Friedrich Merz addressed parliament Thursday, outlining a vision for a strong and independent Europe that remains a steadfast ally to the United States. He emphasized the importance of the European Union as a defender of freedom in an increasingly complex world.
Merz highlighted the need for Europe to assert itself on the global stage, advocating for greater economic growth, technological advancement, and responsibility for its own security. He stressed that while Europe seeks new trade partnerships, it must also nurture existing alliances, particularly the crucial bond with America.
“Trans-Atlantic trust is a value in itself,” Merz stated, underscoring the importance of continued cooperation with the United States. He affirmed Europe’s commitment to NATO, advocating for its strengthening and ensuring that European nations are seen as partners, not subordinates.
The Chancellor pushed back against recent criticisms suggesting that European troops avoided frontline combat in Afghanistan. He emphasized the sacrifices made by German soldiers, noting the lives lost and the many wounded during the nearly two-decade deployment. Merz insisted that their service, undertaken in the interest of their ally, the United States, should not be belittled.
Merz’s remarks signal a desire for a balanced relationship with the United States, one characterized by mutual respect and shared commitment to freedom and security.
