Ethan Hawke Reflects on Not Getting ‘Titanic’ Role
Ethan Hawke recently shared his thoughts on missing out on the iconic role of Jack Dawson in James Cameron’s blockbuster film, Titanic. In a candid interview, he expressed relief that Leonardo DiCaprio took on the part, stating, “I don’t think I would have handled that success as well as Leo.”
Hawke acknowledged DiCaprio’s immense fame following the film’s release in 1997, calling him “a f—ing Beatle.” DiCaprio’s portrayal of Jack Dawson alongside Kate Winslet not only solidified his status in Hollywood but also opened doors for future opportunities in movies like Catch Me If You Can and The Aviator.
Despite his initial hesitance about fame, Hawke had already made a name for himself in earlier films like Dead Poets Society and Before Sunrise. He later received an Academy Award nomination for his role in Training Day, demonstrating his talent in the industry.
In a nod to his own experiences, Hawke reflected on how awards shouldn’t define an actor’s status. After not winning the Oscar for Training Day, co-star Denzel Washington advised him, “You don’t want an award to improve your status; you want to improve the award’s status.”
Hawke also spoke about the emotional challenges behind his high-profile divorce from actress Uma Thurman, describing the media attention as “humiliating.” The couple shares two children and has been open about their struggles following their split.
Fans can look forward to seeing Hawke in upcoming films like She Dances and Black Phone 2, showcasing his enduring presence in the film world.
