A family lunch turned tragic when three guests ended up dead, leading to a murder charge against a woman.
On July 29, 2023, Erin Patterson invited her ex-husband’s parents, Don and Gail Patterson, both 70 years old, to her home in Leongatha, Australia. Joining them were Gail’s sister Heather Wilkinson, aged 66, and Heather’s husband, Ian, who is 68, as reported by local authorities.
The meal they shared included Beef Wellington, which has since been linked to the poisoning that caused the deaths. Reports indicate that the dish contained toxic mushrooms. Don, Gail, and Heather were hospitalized shortly after the meal and passed away within days. Ian eventually recovered but took weeks to do so.
Erin, who is 50, is now facing multiple murder charges related to this incident. Investigators allege she also attempted to poison her ex-husband, Simon Patterson, on three separate occasions in the years before this lunch, though he was not present that day.
According to Victoria Police, Erin is charged with three counts of murder and five counts of attempted murder.
After the incidents, Erin expressed her grief, stating she was “devastated” and couldn’t believe the tragic events had occurred.
Authorities believe that the victims consumed Amanita phalloides, commonly known as death cap mushrooms, which are among the most toxic mushrooms for humans.
Interestingly, there were two children present at the lunch who did not fall ill, suggesting they were provided with a different meal.
Erin made her first court appearance on April 15 and has pleaded not guilty to the charges. She is expected to stand trial later this month.
