Universal Orlando Resort is set to debut its newest and largest theme park, Universal Epic Universe, on May 22. This multibillion-dollar expansion features five uniquely themed areas and a 500-room hotel, cleverly timed to welcome families during the busy summer months when kids are out of school.
This marks the first major traditional theme park to open in Florida since Universal Islands of Adventure in 1999, although Universal did launch a water park, Volcano Bay, in 2017. The new park will bring the total to four parks within the resort, increasing competition with the nearby Walt Disney World, which attracts approximately 74 million tourists each year to the Orlando area.
Universal boasts that Epic Universe is its most technologically advanced park yet, featuring innovations such as a facial recognition system to improve the ride experience.
Comcast NBCUniversal, the parent company of Universal, has also unveiled plans for a Universal-branded theme park and resort in Europe, just north of London. Additionally, a horror entertainment attraction in Las Vegas is expected to open later this year, along with a family-friendly park planned for a suburb of Dallas next year.
Single-day tickets for Epic Universe will start at $139 for adults but could rise to $199 during peak times, which might be a concern for families in light of economic uncertainties under the current administration. Factors such as tariff announcements may affect family vacation plans, and concerns about the treatment of visitors entering the U.S. could deter international tourists.
Despite these potential obstacles, Orlando’s tourism economy saw impressive growth last year, with Orange County collecting a record $359 million in tourist taxes.
Epic Universe will feature several exciting areas:
Celestial Park will serve as the main hub, featuring original characters and a serene environment with colorful flowers and a massive water fountain. Here, visitors can enjoy thrilling attractions like a dual-launching roller coaster called Stardust Racers.
Super Nintendo World promises a vibrant and immersive atmosphere with attractions inspired by popular Nintendo characters, including rides themed around Donkey Kong and Mario.
Dark Universe pays homage to horror classics like Frankenstein and Dracula, where guests can explore recreated settings, ride through a haunted castle, and enjoy family-friendly coasters based on legendary creatures.
The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic presents the third installment of the beloved Harry Potter attractions, immersing visitors in the enchanting world of wizards with rides and intricately designed environments inspired by the films.
How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berke showcases next-generation animatronic dragons and exciting rides, letting visitors experience the thrill of Viking adventures firsthand.
With Epic Universe, Universal Orlando is poised to offer fresh excitement while competing fiercely for the affection of tourists.
