Sources close to the discussion revealed that the meeting took place with the House DOGE subcommittee led by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene from Georgia.
During the 45-minute session, Musk expressed his team’s confidence in identifying substantial savings, stating, “Now, we’ll see, right? We’re going to make mistakes, but we’ll correct them quickly.” Some lawmakers raised doubts about whether government agencies, like the Treasury Department, have enough resources to implement Musk’s ideas, but he assured them, “We’re gonna help them.”
Musk suggested that the government could streamline operations by better coordinating data, such as ensuring systems flag deceased individuals who may still be receiving government benefits. According to Rep. Michael Cloud from Texas, “A lot of this is cross-referencing databases, making sure they’re talking to each other.”
Lawmakers also discussed the potential of a congressional rescission package, aimed at reducing excessive government spending, a point that could see support from GOP members without needing Democratic consensus.
The meeting with Musk resulted in a deeper understanding of his initiatives, as Rep. Brandon Gill of Texas noted their goal was to “strategize” on how to better coordinate their efforts. Several House Republicans voiced their frustrations over the level of waste they have discovered in the government’s dealings, with Rep. Mike Haridopolos commenting on the lack of checks to ensure taxpayer dollars are used efficiently.
Rep. Ralph Norman shared insights into Musk’s approach, emphasizing his commitment to uncovering where tax dollars are spent, declaring, “He’s just getting started.” Norman mentioned Musk acknowledged the possibility of mistakes along the way but seemed determined to make the situation right.
With concerns about veterans and farmers being raised, Rep. Derrick Van Orden of Wisconsin highlighted that Musk assured him benefits for veterans would not be compromised. This shows Musk’s willingness to listen to key issues affecting constituents and work toward solutions that uphold important benefits.
