Billionaire Elon Musk has announced a new requirement for federal employees: they must report their productivity to keep their jobs. Addressing the matter on social media, Musk emphasized that the expectations are minimal, stating, “the bar is very low.”
Musk, who is a senior advisor to former President Donald Trump, mentioned that employees will receive an email asking them to describe what they accomplished the previous week. If they do not respond, it will be viewed as a resignation. “It should take less than five minutes to send a simple email with some bullet points,” he noted, setting the deadline for responses by 11:59 p.m. on Monday.
In his posts, Musk made it clear that the task is not demanding. He stated, “Can you send an email with words that make any sense at all? That’s literally the standard we’re looking for.” This move aligns with the Trump Administration’s goal of ensuring an efficient federal workforce.
Musk’s announcement was confirmed by a spokesperson for the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM), which supports this initiative to promote accountability among federal employees. However, the new FBI Director, Kash Patel, has told agency staff to hold off on responding to the productivity request until further notice, reinforcing the FBI’s own internal review processes.
The American Federation of Government Employees has voiced strong opposition to this requirement. They argue that it is unfair and disrespectful for employees to justify their work to someone they describe as “out-of-touch” and privileged, emphasizing the importance of public service.
As the Department of Government Efficiency, led by Musk, continues its mission to identify and eliminate waste within the federal government, this new policy is a significant step towards fostering greater accountability and productivity.
