Ed Williams, the actor known for his roles in the original “Naked Gun” movies and the “Police Squad!” TV show, has passed away in California at the age of 98.
Williams’ granddaughter, Stephanie Williams, confirmed that he died on October 2nd in Los Angeles.
Born in San Jose, California, in 1926, Williams entered the entertainment world after serving his country in the U.S. Navy. He started in theater, performing in over 200 plays while also working at KSJO Radio.
In 1955, he and his wife moved to Los Angeles. He taught at the Don Martin School of Radio and Television Arts, and later at Los Angeles City College, where he taught broadcasting and worked as an announcer at KCET television.
His big break came in 1982 with “Police Squad!” which led to his role as Ted Olsen in “The Naked Gun” movies.
Williams retired from teaching in 1989 after 28 years at Los Angeles City College.
Besides “Naked Gun” and “Police Squad!,” Williams also appeared in movies like “Father of the Bride,” “Rat Boy,” and “The Giant of Thunder Mountain.” His last acting work was in the “Hollywood Radio Players” series in 2022 and 2023.
Williams is survived by his wife, Nancy, his sons Fred and Ian, and his grandchildren Stephanie and Maureen.
