The Vatican marked Easter Sunday with Cardinal Angelo Comastri leading the Mass in St. Peter’s Square, as Pope Francis continues to recover from serious health issues. The 88-year-old pontiff is recuperating after a bout with double pneumonia and has made only a few public appearances since returning to the Vatican.
Despite expectations for the Pope to appear during the Easter services, he missed both Good Friday and Holy Saturday observances, highlighting the caution surrounding his health. Easter is a significant occasion for Christians, commemorating the resurrection of Jesus Christ, and this year, it is celebrated simultaneously by both Catholics and Orthodox Christians.
Traditionally, Easter at the Vatican includes a Mass and the Pope’s familiar “Urbi et Orbi” blessing, which speaks to global events and challenges. However, it remains uncertain whether Pope Francis will be well enough to deliver this speech or simply offer his blessing from the balcony.
In light of his recovery, Pope Francis has reduced his public engagements, following medical advice aimed at restoring his lung function. Even in limited appearances, he has shown a sustained interest in connecting with those in need, such as his recent visit to a prison in Rome, where he spent Holy Thursday with inmates.
This Easter serves as a reminder of hope and renewal, even amidst personal challenges, and reflects the enduring spirit of the Christian faith during difficult times.
