Dee Wallace Talks About E.T. and Its Family-Friendly Elements
Dee Wallace, known for her role as Mary in the classic film E.T., recently shared insights about the making of the iconic movie on the Still Here Hollywood podcast. During her appearance, she revealed a significant behind-the-scenes moment: she pushed back against the director, Steven Spielberg, over some sexual undertones in a particular scene.
At 76, Wallace recalled arguing with Spielberg, emphasizing that E.T. was meant to be a "family film." She pointed out that adding any risqué elements could steer it away from its intended audience. Wallace explained that they eventually reached a compromise after discussing the matter with the film’s writer and producer.
She explained that there was even a subplot suggesting a romantic connection between her character and E.T. Wallace mentioned, "There was a scene where he came in to put Reese’s Pieces down on my bedside table while I was asleep," highlighting how Spielberg initially envisioned the scene.
Wallace remained firm in her belief that the film should maintain its wholesome nature, stating, "This was a family film, and it felt very pure to me." Ultimately, they adjusted the scene, pulling the sheet up to a level she found comfortable.
In addition to this interesting tidbit, Wallace also praised her co-star Drew Barrymore, who was just seven years old at the time of filming. She recognized Barrymore’s talent early on, noting that it was clear she would become a producer and director in the future.
Wallace expressed her confidence in the film’s success as she watched audience reactions, saying, "That film reaches into your soul, into your heart. It surpasses some block that we have and wakes us up."
