Dove Cameron has returned to the music scene after taking a break to focus on her mental health and artistry. The talented actress and singer, now 29, is excited to share her new single titled "Too Much," which dropped on February 21. This electro-pop track showcases a more confident and powerful vocal style that fans may not have seen from her before.
Cameron has often displayed her vocal gifts through various theatrical projects, including the Apple TV+ series Schmigadoon! and the off-Broadway Clueless musical. However, she previously adopted a softer tone in her songs, like her breakout hit "Boyfriend" from 2022. In a recent interview, she reflected on her journey to embrace her true voice.
“For a long time, I felt that my voice was something to be shaped to fit others’ expectations,” she shared, revealing that she struggled with feelings of inadequacy when it came to her singing. Harsh feedback as a child, including a remark about hating her tone, made her doubt her natural ability.
Encouragement from close friends and her boyfriend, Damiano David of the rock band Måneskin, has played a crucial role in her resurgence. Cameron shared that they motivated her to embrace her true sound, pushing her to stop whispering on tracks and to sing with confidence.
Working on "Too Much" and future songs helped her appreciate her voice anew. She described her time in the studio as liberating, saying, "I broke through my complex about my voice, and it delivered me a new sound that I feel really at home and comfortable with."
The lyrics of her new single resonate with her personal growth, expressing a bold message about self-worth: "If you say I’m too much, baby go find less / If you can’t keep up, stay below, I guess / If I’m such a big deal, maybe you’re too little."
Cameron reflected on her experiences in past relationships—both romantic and friendship—where she felt she was giving more than she received. This led to confusion and doubt about herself. She emphasized the cultural pressure many face, especially women and queer individuals, to hold back their true selves.
After distancing herself from those negative environments and forming meaningful connections, especially her current relationship, everything became clearer for her. "Now I am only surrounded by people who want me to be as big as possible and want me to win," Cameron concluded, showing her new direction and strength in both music and life.
