Dolly Parton Reflects on Loss of Husband Carl Dean and Impact on Her Music
Dolly Parton recently opened up about her late husband, Carl Dean, who passed away in March 2025 at the age of 82. The beloved country star, who was married to Dean for nearly 60 years, shared her ongoing grief and how it has influenced her songwriting during an appearance on Khloé Kardashian’s podcast, Khloé in Wonder Land.
Since Dean’s death, Parton has been more reserved when discussing their enduring love. However, she expressed to Kardashian that while she is inspired to create new music, she is struggling to finish songs. “There are several things I have wanted to start, but I can’t do it,” she admitted. Parton explained that the emotional weight of her loss has made it hard to focus on her creative process.
“I can’t afford the luxury of getting that emotional right now,” she said. “But I will write something else if it comes.” At this time, she has put her music on hold, preferring to cope with her feelings in her own way.
In May, Parton remembered her and Dean’s wedding anniversary by visiting the church in Ringgold, Georgia, where they were married. She reflected on how her faith helped her cope with the pain of losing him. “I’m a person of faith, even though I lost him on this earthly plane,” she shared. “He’s in God’s arms now and not mine.”
Despite the sorrow, Parton holds onto the beautiful memories they created together, saying Dean remains “still in my heart and in my memories.” She stated that navigating life without him has been challenging, but she finds solace in her faith and the belief that they will meet again.
“It’s hard,” she said, “but I’m holding up, doing as well as one can after so many years of loving someone.”
As she continues to reflect on her incredible journey with Dean, Parton looks forward to creating new music that pays tribute to their enduring love.
