The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) recently revealed that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents arrested 17 individuals who are in the country illegally and have been convicted of serious crimes.
According to DHS, these arrests are part of a new effort to highlight the dangers posed by illegal immigrants who commit crimes. The agency is calling this initiative the “worst of the worst” campaign.
“While many Americans were celebrating the holidays, the dedicated men and women of ICE were working hard to keep our communities safe,” said DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin. “This weekend’s arrests included those convicted of murder, child exploitation, and drug trafficking. Americans can be safer knowing these criminals are off our streets.”
DHS stated that those arrested include individuals convicted of crimes such as second-degree murder, sexual exploitation of a minor, and other serious offenses.
These arrests come after ICE agents in Los Angeles arrested over 10,000 illegal immigrants. Some politicians have criticized efforts to deport those who are here illegally, the Trump administration has remained committed to enforcing immigration laws and deporting those who break them.
“If you follow the law, you’ll find opportunity,” said DHS Secretary Kristi Noem. “If you break it, you’ll face the consequences.”
DHS recently launched a website detailing the arrests and convictions of illegal immigrants who have committed serious crimes. The agency believes that this information will help the public understand the importance of enforcing immigration laws.
