Long Island Family Mourns Slain Israeli-American Soldier
A heart-wrenching memorial service was held on Tuesday for Omer Neutra, a soldier with dual Israeli-American citizenship, who lost his life during the attacks by Hamas on October 7, 2023. His family, friends, and community gathered at the Midway Jewish Center in Syosset to pay tribute to the 21-year-old tank commander, who was confirmed dead after being presumed missing for over a year.
Omer’s mother, Orna, shared her intense feelings of hope and despair through tears, recalling the year spent praying for a sign that her son was still alive. “We envisioned our reunion, holding onto the hope that we would bring you home,” she expressed, her voice thick with sorrow. Unfortunately, that hope was shattered when they learned he had died defending his nation.
His father, Ronen, spoke of the challenges the family faced in the lengthy wait for answers. “We fought for 14 months, praying for his survival through unimaginable conditions. Then, one knock on the door changed everything,” he said as he addressed the growing crowd of nearly 1,500 mourners.
Omer was a respectful and dedicated young man, who chose to serve in the Israel Defense Forces instead of attending college. His father expressed pride in Omer’s commitment to protect his homeland, especially during the chaos of the surprise attack. “He was among the first responders, rushing to confront the threat without knowing the peril he would face,” Ronen added.
The service included poignant reflections by Omer’s younger brother, Daniel, who lamented the bittersweet realization that he will soon surpass his older brother in age. He called attention to the numerous stories and memories that will keep Omer’s spirit alive for generations.
In their grief, the Neutra family called on supporters and the community to continue advocating for the remaining hostages taken during the attacks. “It’s now Israel’s turn to show love and bring back all those taken,” said Ronen, emphasizing the need for solidarity in times of adversity.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul paid her respects, emphasizing the bravery of the Neutra family as they navigated through their pain, and pledging to work towards the release of other hostages. “Our hearts are heavy today; this nightmare must end,” she stated emotionally.
Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman praised the Neutra family’s resilience, commending their strength and dignity in facing such a heartbreaking tragedy. As the community gathers to honor Omer’s life, they commit to keeping his memory and dedication to service alive.
