Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is taking his time in selecting a successor for Senator Marco Rubio, who is set to become President-elect Donald Trump’s Secretary of State. As the process unfolds, some of Trump’s supporters are urging DeSantis to consider Lara Trump, the president-elect’s daughter-in-law, for the role.
DeSantis, a prominent figure in the Republican Party, previously ran for the presidential nomination but ultimately backed Trump’s candidacy after losing the race. According to a spokesperson for the governor, a thorough evaluation of potential candidates will take place in December and will include interviews with several individuals. The representative noted that DeSantis is not rushing to reach this important decision.
Senator Rubio is expected to continue serving until at least January, and his confirmation as Secretary of State is anticipated to proceed smoothly, showing little opposition among his colleagues in the Senate.
In a recent statement, DeSantis expressed that he is looking for a successor who excels in areas such as immigration, border security, and fiscal responsibility, all while adhering to conservative principles and demonstrating a track record of success.
Lara Trump, known for her strong support of her father-in-law’s agenda, would provide a steadfast ally for him in the Senate. Some Republican senators have shown a degree of independence from Trump, voicing concerns over his Cabinet appointments.
As the Senate stands, Republicans hold a 53-47 majority, but a few members have hesitated regarding Trump’s nominees, reflecting divisions within the party.
Lara Trump has been involved in party leadership as the co-chair of the Republican National Committee and has previously been considered as a candidate for Senate in her home state of North Carolina.
While DeSantis could appoint himself to the Senate seat, he appears to be leaning away from that option. The list of potential candidates for Rubio’s replacement includes notable Florida figures such as Lieutenant Governor Jeanette Nuñez and Attorney General Ashley Moody, among others.
As the presidential transition occurs, other congressional vacancies are anticipated, including the Senate seat in Ohio currently held by Vice President-elect JD Vance.
