Denver is experiencing a significant financial strain due to the influx of migrants, with recent reports highlighting that the city has spent an astonishing $356 million to assist them. This amount breaks down to roughly $7,900 for each migrant living in the city, according to an analysis from the Common Sense Institute (CSI). This research group, which focuses on economic issues, revealed that these costs represent about 8% of Denver’s projected budget of $4.4 billion for 2025.
The analysis indicates that much of this spending has been directed towards education for migrant children, healthcare, housing, and other support services. The number of migrants arriving in the Denver area since December 2022 is estimated at around 45,000, with more than 16,000 of them enrolling in local schools.
In response to this crisis, Mayor Mike Johnston has made controversial statements, even suggesting he might face jail time over his opposition to potential mass deportation efforts proposed under the Trump administration. This stance comes as he has already made cuts to city services, such as reducing hours at recreational facilities and halting routine maintenance, to reallocate funds to support the migrant population.
Health professionals in Denver have voiced concerns that the city’s healthcare system is overwhelmed due to the rising number of migrant visits, leading to what they describe as a humanitarian crisis. Emergency departments alone have reportedly provided around $49 million in uncompensated care to these individuals, exacerbating the financial burden on the city’s resources.
Mayor Johnston’s position as a so-called sanctuary city means that local authorities do not enforce federal immigration laws, further complicating the situation. Critics argue that this approach is costly and unsustainable, putting pressure on public services and resources.
As the conversation around immigration policy continues, the financial implications for cities like Denver must not be overlooked, raising questions about the consequences of current immigration practices and how they impact local communities. The struggle to balance support for migrants while maintaining essential city services poses a significant challenge for local leaders.
