Jay North, known for his role as the mischievous Dennis in the classic television show “Dennis the Menace,” has passed away at the age of 73. He died at his home in Lake Butler, Florida, after a courageous battle with colon cancer, as confirmed by his long-time friend Laurie Jacobson and his booking agent Bonnie Vent.
Jacobson shared a heartfelt tribute on Facebook, reflecting on North’s generous spirit. She remarked, “He had a heart as big as a mountain and loved his friends deeply,” noting that he often ended conversations with a warm, “I love you with all my heart.”
North was just six years old when he was chosen to star in the CBS sitcom, which began airing in 1959 and was based on Hank Ketcham’s beloved comic strip. The show portrayed the life of a lively boy whose playful antics often put him at odds with his neighbor, Mr. Wilson, played by Joseph Kearns. Dennis’ loving parents were portrayed by Herbert Anderson and Gloria Henry, helping to create a picture of suburban life that resonated with many American families.
Although the show ended in 1963, it continued to entertain audiences in syndication for many years. Beyond “Dennis the Menace,” North’s career included appearances in various television series, such as “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.,” “The Lucy Show,” “My Three Sons,” and even “The Simpsons.” He also had roles in several films, including “Maya,” “The Teacher,” and “Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star.”
North is survived by his third wife, Cindy, and his three stepdaughters, who will remember him fondly for both his talent and his kind-hearted nature.
