Lawmaker Faces Scrutiny Over Ties to Epstein
Washington, D.C. – A Democratic lawmaker is under fire after it was revealed she exchanged messages with Jeffrey Epstein, a convicted sex offender, during a congressional hearing in 2019. Republicans have introduced a resolution to formally reprimand the congresswoman, Stacey Plaskett, arguing that her actions reflect poorly on the House of Representatives.
During the hearing, which involved testimony from Michael Cohen, then an attorney for former President Trump, Plaskett, who represents the U.S. Virgin Islands, reportedly texted with Epstein. Critics point out that Epstein had close ties to the Virgin Islands.
Representative Jamie Raskin, defended Plaskett, suggesting she was simply communicating with a constituent. He questioned the severity of the situation, asking if a phone call was enough to warrant censure.
However, this defense has been met with strong criticism. Some point out that Plaskett’s connections to Epstein go beyond a simple constituent relationship. Reports suggest she received campaign support from Epstein and his associates.
The White House criticized Raskin’s defense, calling it “sick.” Others have accused Raskin of downplaying the situation, given the serious nature of Epstein’s crimes.
Conservative voices have been particularly vocal. Commentators questioned why Raskin was defending Plaskett, and some highlighted Raskin’s past connection to Plaskett as her professor, raising questions about bias.
Plaskett defended herself, stating that at the time of the texts, Epstein was a constituent not publicly known to be under federal investigation. She denied seeking advice from him.
Despite the controversy, the resolution to censure Plaskett failed in a House vote.
