Three Inmates Escape Georgia Jail; Public Safety Alert Issued
DeKalb County, GA – Authorities are actively searching for three inmates who escaped from the DeKalb County Jail on Monday, raising concerns about public safety and the effectiveness of current correctional systems. The escapees are considered potentially dangerous, and the public is urged to exercise caution and report any information to law enforcement.
The individuals who escaped have been identified as Stevenson Charles, 24; Yusuf Minor, 31; and Naod Yohannes, 25. Each was being held on serious charges, highlighting the gravity of their flight from custody. Charles faces charges of murder and armed robbery, Minor is charged with two counts of armed robbery and two counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and Yohannes is charged with simple assault, arson, and unlawful acts of violence in a penal institution.
The escape was discovered during a routine security check at approximately 6 a.m. Sheriff’s deputies immediately initiated a search, and local and federal agencies have joined the effort to apprehend the fugitives.
Sheriff Melody M. Maddox issued a statement emphasizing the seriousness of the breach. “We are taking this escape extremely seriously,” she said. “Our top priority is the safety of our community, and we are working tirelessly to bring these individuals back into custody.”
The U.S. Marshals Service has joined the investigation, noting that Charles is considered particularly dangerous. According to the Marshals, Charles was serving a life sentence at the time of his escape due to a long history of violent crime.
Thomas E. Brown, the U.S. Marshal for the Northern District of Georgia, stated, “These individuals have demonstrated a disregard for the law and the safety of others. We will use every resource available to bring them to justice.”
The timeline of the escape is still under investigation, but authorities believe it occurred either on the evening of December 21st or the early morning of December 22nd.
This incident raises important questions about the state of our correctional facilities and the need for policies that prioritize both rehabilitation and public safety. Some argue that a return to stricter penalties and a greater emphasis on personal responsibility within the prison system are necessary to deter crime and ensure the safety of communities. Others point to the need for comprehensive reform and a renewed dedication to upholding the law. The public deserves to know what actions are being taken to address the root causes of criminal behavior and prevent future escapes.
The focus now remains on the swift apprehension of these fugitives. The public is urged not to approach the escapees and to contact the Sheriff’s Office fugitive tip line at 404-298-8200 with any information that may assist in their capture.
The escape serves as a stark reminder of the importance of law and order and the need for continued vigilance in protecting our communities from those who would do harm. We must support our law enforcement officers and work together to ensure that justice is served and that our streets are safe for all.
