A Decade-Old Mystery Finally Resolved for Retired Michigan Autoworker
PETERSBURG, Mich. — Richard Guilford, a retired autoworker from Michigan, was recently surprised by a late-night message on Facebook. A stranger from Minnesota had uncovered his long-lost wallet while working on a car.
The wallet had been missing for nearly a decade, lost during his time working at a Ford factory. It was discovered tucked away in the engine bay of a 2015 Ford Edge at a repair shop in Lake Crystal, Minnesota. To Guilford’s astonishment, the wallet contained cash, identification, and cherished gift cards, making it a sentimental find.
Guilford, who worked at Ford for nearly 35 years, couldn’t believe the news. “It restores your faith in humanity,” he stated, highlighting how the mechanic took the initiative to reach out to him.
The wallet’s discovery came during a routine repair when mechanic Chad Volk noticed something amiss while working on the vehicle. After some tinkering, he found the wallet resting comfortably between the car’s transmission and air filter box.
“I thought it was crazy,” Volk said. Reflecting on the unusual find, he felt compelled to track down the wallet’s owner.
Back in 2014, Guilford lost his wallet while on the job, believing it had slipped from his pocket into a Ford Flex and not realizing it had vanished into the depths of a car’s engine. He and his coworkers had searched for it but ultimately had to move on with their lives.
The moment Guilford received a picture of the wallet and saw his younger self in the driver’s license photo was a mix of nostalgia and surprise. “It felt like a blast from the past,” he shared.
Now, at 56 years old, Guilford has moved past his years at Ford but carries memories deeply tied to his time there. The wallet is now more than just a personal item; it’s a family keepsake filled with history. Guilford plans to preserve it for his children and even future generations, believing every story deserves to be told.
This incredible story serves as a reminder that sometimes, humanity shines through when we least expect it.
