Captain Sig Hansen Reflects on Retirement and Family Life
Captain Sig Hansen, a well-known figure from the Discovery Channel’s hit show Deadliest Catch, has recently shared his evolving thoughts on retirement. After years of braving the dangerous waters of the Bering Sea, the 59-year-old sailor admits that his perspective is changing, particularly due to experiences with loss and family.
In a light-hearted remark during an interview, Hansen referred to himself as “a professional liar” when it comes to discussing retirement. He has often joked that he has plenty of years left in him but now feels a different kind of fear when going out to sea. The reality of mortality has weighed heavily on him as he has witnessed friends and fellow fishermen face life-threatening situations.
“I think about retiring more often now,” he explained. “I’ve lost so many people, and it makes me more cautious.” He noted that the thrill of the challenge on the sea isn’t as appealing as it once was. Now, his thoughts often turn to family and the time he wants to spend with them after years of hard work.
Hansen has faced many stormy challenges, including a heart attack in 2016 and the emotional toll from the loss of peers over the years. While he isn’t ready to leave his captain’s chair just yet, he acknowledges that his priorities have shifted. “I will continue to do it, but retirement is looking more appealing,” he stated.
The captain now finds joy in being a grandfather to four grandchildren, a role he once found amusing when hearing other fishermen brag about their grandkids. “Now, I’m one of those guys,” he confessed. “I love it, I really do.”
As Deadliest Catch continues its 21st season, Hansen is leading his crew back to Adak Island, searching for the elusive giant king crab. However, the challenges are greater than ever; the harsh conditions and mechanical issues have turned their hunt into a fight for survival.
Viewers can catch Deadliest Catch every Friday at 8 PM ET/PT on the Discovery Channel, where the dangers of fishing continue to unfold.
