BYU Basketball Player Faces DUI Charge
Provo, Utah – Kennard Davis Jr., a member of the Brigham Young University (BYU) basketball team, has been charged with Driving Under the Influence (DUI), a class B misdemeanor. The charge was officially filed in Provo City Justice Court on Tuesday afternoon.
This legal action follows a report released by the Provo Police Department, which stated that Davis was allegedly found to be in possession of marijuana after a two-car accident that occurred last Thursday morning. The police report did not specify who was at fault for the accident. Six police officers responded to the scene of the crash.
Following the filing of the charge, Provo City Attorney’s Office prosecutor Robert Trombly recommended a fine of $1,390. Judge Stephen H. Schreiner has been assigned to oversee the case, according to court documents.
Davis, who recently turned 20, has entered a plea of not guilty to the DUI charge. He has hired attorney C. Danny Frazier to represent him. Frazier, who previously played football for BYU, has requested a jury trial. He has also submitted a motion to obtain all relevant evidence, including statements from Davis and any other individuals involved, as well as any physical evidence collected.
Judge Schreiner has scheduled a pretrial conference for January 12, 2026, to discuss the case further.
According to earlier reports, Davis was given standard field sobriety tests, a drug recognition evaluation, and a blood-urine test following the accident. The reports indicated the presence of drugs.
The Provo Police Department has declined to release the accident report at this time. They stated that they cannot provide further details until the Provo City Attorney’s Office has completed its investigation and proceedings.
Davis recently traveled with the BYU basketball team to Boston for a game against UConn. However, he did not participate in the game. Head Coach Kevin Young stated that Davis was “held out” due to a violation of team rules.
BYU Athletics has released a statement confirming that Davis has been suspended from the team for violating team rules. The duration of the suspension is yet to be determined.
Coach Kevin Young addressed the situation, stating that he is aware of all the details but will allow the school to handle the matter. He added that he would be open to discussing it further if given the opportunity but will respect the school’s handling of the situation for now. When asked if Davis would play against Wisconsin, Young indicated it was unlikely but that the situation was still being sorted out.
Young also discussed his general philosophy regarding team rule violations. He emphasized the importance of doing the right thing and that there are consequences for those who don’t, based on team and university rules.
In related news, BYU center Keba Keita sustained a head injury during the game against UConn. He is currently being monitored daily and remains out of practice. Coach Young stated that Keita is improving and that his condition is being evaluated on a day-to-day basis.
