Craig Melvin is set to take the co-anchor chair at TODAY alongside Savannah Guthrie. This news comes nearly two months after Hoda Kotb announced her departure from the show. Craig, who has been a part of NBC News for about 14 years, will join Savannah for the 7 and 8 a.m. segments starting January 13. Hoda will say her farewells on January 10.
Expressing his excitement, Craig stated, “I am beyond excited and grateful. This is the latest in a long line of blessings.”
Savannah also shared her joy about Craig’s new role, noting that when the staff learned about the decision, they broke into applause, calling it one of NBC News’ best choices. She said, “This is one of the most popular decisions NBC News has ever made. Congratulations.”
Craig has worn many hats during his time at TODAY, including roles as weekend co-anchor and co-host of the third hour of the show. He is also a dedicated family man, married to sports broadcaster Lindsay Czarniak and a father to two young children, Delano and Sybil.
In addition to his new co-anchor role, Craig will still co-host the third hour with Al Roker, Dylan Dreyer, and Sheinelle Jones. Libby Leist, the senior vice president of TODAY, expressed her enthusiasm, highlighting Craig’s significant contributions to the team and his ability to connect with viewers, all while maintaining his charm.
On the show, Hoda shared how proud she was of Craig, declaring that he was “made for this job” and that he possesses all the qualities needed. Al Roker joined via video chat to express his happiness for Craig, noting, “You are so worthy of this.”
As for changes hitting TODAY, after Hoda’s exit, the fourth hour will transition to “TODAY with Jenna & Friends,” starting January 13. This segment, co-hosted by Jenna Bush Hager, will feature a mix of guests before a new permanent co-host is selected.
Throughout her last shows in January, Hoda will be celebrated. She recently reflected on her time at TODAY, indicating that turning 60 inspired her to move on and seek new adventures.
Craig has voiced his deep respect for Hoda, praising her genuine nature on and off the screen. He said, “You’ve been the heart of this show for a long time, and there’s no replacing that.”
