Costco Seeks Tariff Refunds, Citing Concerns Over Government Process
Costco has joined other businesses in seeking refunds on tariffs paid during the previous administration, appealing to the U.S. Court of International Trade. The company is acting amid uncertainty over the legality of those taxes.
Earlier rulings by the U.S. Court of International Trade and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit challenged the tariffs, and the Supreme Court is now considering the case. Some justices have questioned the president’s authority to impose tariffs on goods from nearly every country under the guise of a national emergency.
The outcome of the Supreme Court case could determine whether importers are entitled to refunds on the tariffs they paid. Costco argues it is seeking a refund now to protect its right to a complete repayment.
Other companies, including Revlon and Bumble Bee Foods, have filed similar actions.
Tariffs that are being challenged in court have generated around $90 billion.
