Rep. Cori Bush from Missouri, known for her alignment with a progressive group of lawmakers often referred to as “The Squad,” has hinted at a future return to political office. Although she was elected in 2021 and secured re-election in 2022, she faced a setback this year, losing her bid in the Democratic primary for Missouri’s 1st Congressional District.
Bush expressed her intention to possibly run for office again, stating, “Running for office again is not off the table at all. I did not expect to only be in Congress for four years… I do believe at some point I will run again.” While she has no concrete plans right now, she believes her political journey is far from over.
Bush emphasized that her group, The Squad, would continue their fight for those in need, even though their numbers in Congress will be smaller in the next term. “Anyone who underestimates our power is severely mistaken,” she said confidently, reassuring supporters that they are not fading away.
Another member of The Squad, Rep. Jamaal Bowman from New York, is also leaving Congress after losing in the Democratic primary this year. Bowman has shown interest in potentially seeking office again, stating that he plans to focus on community organizing and fundraising moving forward. He expressed a commitment to building local power, especially in New York.
Bush and Bowman’s journeys reflect the ongoing struggle within the Democratic Party, where progressive candidates face challenges in maintaining their foothold. Their future political plans suggest that they still intend to shape and influence their communities, even from outside Congress.
