Cooper Kupp has struck a new deal with the Seattle Seahawks, signing a three-year contract worth $45 million, according to a knowledgeable source. The agreement is still pending final signatures.
Kupp, who was named MVP of Super Bowl 56, was recently released by the Los Angeles Rams. He is expected to fill the void left by DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett as he returns to his home state of Washington. The Seahawks have also made headlines by trading quarterback Geno Smith and signing Sam Darnold during the free agency period.
During his college days at Eastern Washington, Kupp made a name for himself. He won the prestigious AP Offensive Player of the Year award in 2021, achieving the rare “receiving triple crown” by racking up 145 catches, 1,947 receiving yards, and 16 touchdowns. He also had a remarkable playoff run, catching 33 passes for 478 yards and scoring six touchdowns, including the decisive touchdown in his Super Bowl victory against the Cincinnati Bengals.
However, Kupp’s performance in recent seasons has been impacted by injuries, preventing him from reaching 900 receiving yards over the last three years. Last season was particularly challenging as he dealt with an ankle injury that sidelined him for four games. In the final five games of the season, he recorded only 12 catches for 162 yards, marking one of the least productive stretches of his career.
His role with the Rams diminished as Puka Nacua emerged as a standout receiver over the last two seasons. Meanwhile, the Rams responded by bringing in Davante Adams, a three-time All-Pro wide receiver, on a two-year deal potentially worth up to $46 million.
Kupp was drafted by the Rams in the third round of the 2017 draft, which was the first draft class for coach Sean McVay. Throughout his career, he has been a significant contributor to the team’s offense, catching 634 passes for a total of 7,776 yards and scoring 57 touchdowns.
