Sheepshead Bay Residents Rally Against Homeless Shelter Plans
In a striking demonstration, numerous residents of Sheepshead Bay took to the streets to voice their strong opposition to a proposed homeless shelter in their community. This gathering follows what locals believe to be a betrayal by the city, which initially promised affordable housing but pivoted to a shelter plan without proper consultation.
On a recent Sunday, a long line of cars snaked through the neighborhood, and demonstrators carried signs proclaiming, “Affordable housing not shelters” and “Keep our kids safe! No shelters near playgrounds or schools!” The protest centered around a specific site on Coyle Street that had been earmarked for a family homeless shelter, originally intended to house 169 families. The community initially welcomed plans for affordable housing in 2022, but after a developer withdrew, city officials opted for the shelter plan in 2023, catching residents off guard.
The march commenced at the proposed shelter site and featured community activist and political candidate Curtis Sliwa, among other local figures. Sliwa voiced the collective frustration, stating, “The mayor refuses to engage with us. This community is outraged. We were promised affordable housing, not this sudden switch to a shelter.”
As the caravan moved through the streets, many local business owners and residents joined in, inadvertently causing significant traffic disruptions. The atmosphere was charged, filled with passionate pleas for the preservation of community safety and integrity.
"This neighborhood is a great place," said Fruma Feldman, a local resident. "There are older folks who have lived here for years. There are beautiful parks. I believe everyone deserves a place to stay, but shelters can be dangerous. Many homeless individuals I know are too scared to go to these facilities."
Feldman also recounted troubling incidents linked to nearby facilities. "When migrants were moved into Floyd Bennett Field, crime went up significantly, and local businesses struggled. We don’t want our neighborhood to face that same fate with this homeless shelter."
Dimple Willabus, a candidate for the local council, added her voice to the outcry, urging elected officials to pay attention to the community’s concerns. "We need to make ourselves heard—this is about our safety and the integrity of our neighborhood. It’s critical that representatives, like Council member Mercedes Narcisse, take these voices seriously rather than performing PR stunts."
The marchers emphasized that their primary concern is the well-being of their neighbors, particularly children and older residents. Many expressed disbelief that the city would disregard their initial agreement for affordable housing in favor of a shelter, without adequate notice or consultation.
Participants in this protest represent a broader frustration over a perceived lack of responsiveness from city leaders. Many feel that the refugee crisis and recent policies have impacted their community negatively, leading to heightened tensions.
This protest marks another chapter in a long-standing dispute over the shelter plans. For over a month, residents set up tents outside of the proposed site, creating a visible symbol of their resolve. Willabus highlighted the urgency of the situation, indicating that construction could start any day and calling for immediate action from local elected officials.
As the discussion continues, residents of Sheepshead Bay remain steadfast in their desire to preserve their neighborhood. They are striving for a solution that aligns with their community values while ensuring that support for the homeless does not compromise the safety and quality of life for local families. The rally showcased a community united in purpose, emphasizing the importance of listening to constituents in matters affecting their homes and families.
While the city’s plans remain uncertain, one thing is clear: the voice of Sheepshead Bay’s residents is loud and clear, advocating for solutions that prioritize their community’s needs.
