Senator and Presidential Candidate Shot in Bogotá
A tragic incident occurred in Bogotá, Colombia, where a senator and candidate for president was shot multiple times during an event with supporters on June 7.
Miguel Uribe Turbay, who is part of the center-right Centro Democrático party, was engaging with locals in the Fontibón neighborhood when the shooting happened. His wife, Maria Claudia Tarazona, reported that he is "fighting for his life" after undergoing surgery. She expressed gratitude for the support and prayers from his followers.
Authorities have arrested a 15-year-old suspect, who was found with a Glock-style pistol. President Gustavo Petro remarked that it’s unclear if the teenager acted alone.
Reports indicate that Turbay was shot three times, including twice in the head. Following the shooting, he fell to the ground, and footage showed supporters rushing to his aid. Alongside Turbay, at least three other individuals were harmed, including a young man and a woman.
The hospital where Turbay was treated characterized his condition as "extremely serious," stating that he had surgery on his head and thigh and is currently in intensive care. Bogotá Mayor Carlos Fernando Galán mentioned that Turbay is now in a critical phase of recovery after the operation.
As the situation unfolds, President Petro vowed to do everything necessary to locate those responsible for this attack, and investigations are underway regarding Turbay’s security measures at the event. Additionally, the Defense Minister announced a reward of up to 3 billion Colombian pesos for information that could help in the case.
