A man from Southern Illinois has received a life sentence for the tragic murder of his ex-girlfriend, Alexis Maki, in 2023. Emmet Metzger, aged 27, was sentenced to life in prison for the crime, which occurred on November 4, 2023. This decision came shortly after he pleaded guilty to the first-degree murder charge.
Reports indicate that Metzger shot Maki multiple times inside her apartment. Following the shooting, he called 911, admitting to the crime and asking for his arrest. He expressed remorse during the call, saying, “I messed up. I did something so bad. I shot my girlfriend. I need to be arrested, please.”
At the time of her death, Maki was a college student preparing to graduate. During sentencing, Clinton County State’s Attorney J.D. Brandmeyer mentioned that Metzger’s legal team sought a lighter sentence, claiming he needed psychiatric help. However, Brandmeyer dismissed this argument, stating that Metzger had no history of prescribed psychiatric medications and had been under the influence of drugs and alcohol leading up to the incident.
“There is no excuse for killing someone in cold blood after a breakup,” Brandmeyer stated. He emphasized the tragedy of Maki’s death, noting that while Metzger still has his life ahead of him, Maki does not.
Associate Circuit Judge Douglas C. Gruenke imposed the life sentence and decided that Metzger would not receive credit for the time he had already spent in custody.
