A man who was recently charged in a decades-old murder case in Connecticut has died in prison. George Legere, who was 77 years old, was found not breathing in his cell at the MacDougall-Walker Correctional Institution on October 3rd. He was taken to a nearby hospital but died shortly after.
Legere was arrested in connection with the 1973 death of Janet Couture. Police say that she was killed in her home after Legere broke in. The case went cold for many years.
Legere was already in prison for a kidnapping that happened in 1984. Investigators say that evidence from that case helped them to connect him to Couture’s murder.
The police department has said that Legere’s arrest was an important step in bringing justice to Couture’s family, who have waited a long time for answers. The cause of Legere’s death is currently under investigation.
