Cobie Smulders Shares Fun Behind-the-Scenes Secret from ‘How I Met Your Mother’
Cobie Smulders recently opened up about a quirky tradition she had with her co-star Josh Radnor while filming their hit show, How I Met Your Mother. During a podcast episode titled How We Made Your Mother, hosted by Radnor and co-creator Craig Thomas, Smulders revealed how she would prepare Radnor for their intimate scenes.
The 43-year-old actress explained that before filming these scenes, she would whisper “extremely inappropriate” things in Radnor’s ear to create a playful atmosphere. While both actors found the practice amusing, they jokingly refused to share the specific content of those whispers, leaving much to the imagination.
Smulders described this approach as part of what actors call “the moment before," which involves getting into the right headspace right before a scene begins. She noted that the content of the whispers often related to their characters’ previous interactions, as many of their scenes portrayed the characters “post coital.”
Radnor humorously reflected on the experience, stating, “I couldn’t speak” after her whispers, which sometimes left him momentarily stunned on set. He expressed fond memories of those moments, suggesting that if acting didn’t work out for Smulders, she might have a future in writing “the filthiest romance novels.”
Even with lighthearted banter, Smulders maintained a sense of privacy about their shared moments, insisting that only she and Radnor could truly understand the context and delivery of her playful whispers. The exchange highlights the fun dynamic they shared on set, even in more serious scenes.
Overall, their playful approach added to the lightheartedness of the beloved show and showcased the chemistry between the two actors, contributing to the series’ lasting legacy.
