Oakland Mourns Loss of Beloved Coach, Suspect Charged
Oakland, CA – The community is in mourning after the tragic death of John Beam, a respected former football coach. Cedric Irving Jr., 27, has been charged with murder in connection to the shooting that took Beam’s life on Friday at Laney College.
Alameda County District Attorney Ursula Jones Dickson announced the charges, stating that Irving could face a lengthy prison sentence if convicted. The charges also include enhancements for using a firearm and targeting a vulnerable victim.
John Beam, 66, was a pillar of the Oakland community. He was known for his dedication to his players. Beam had retired from coaching last year and was serving as the school’s athletic director.
Irving is currently held without bail and is awaiting arraignment. Authorities have stated that Irving had no prior criminal record.
This tragedy comes as Oakland grapples with rising concerns about violence. Just days prior, a student was shot at Skyline High School. District Attorney Jones Dickson emphasized the need for accountability and action. She calls out the ease of access to firearms, and the impact this has on our youth. She stated that it is “unacceptable” for school lockdowns due to gun violence to become normalized.
Police arrested Irving on Friday morning at a train station. They found him with the weapon used in the shooting, and he admitted to the crime.
Assistant Chief James Beere stated that the shooting was a “targeted incident.” The nature of the relationship between Irving and Beam is still under investigation.
John Beam’s legacy is one of positive influence. He joined Laney College in 2004 and became head coach in 2012. Numerous players under his guidance went on to play in the NFL. Beam’s impact extended beyond the football field. He made a lasting difference in the lives of young men in Oakland.
