Former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton have announced they will not cooperate with a congressional request to testify. The House committee is looking into the actions of Jeffrey Epstein.
In a statement, the Clintons criticized the House investigation, calling it invalid. They believe the head of the House Oversight Committee, Representative James Comer, is unfairly targeting them. The Clintons stated that others were allowed to give written statements, while they are being forced to testify.
Representative Comer has said he will start proceedings to hold the Clintons in contempt of Congress. This could lead to a legal battle. Comer stated that the committee simply wants to ask questions and is not accusing the Clintons of any wrongdoing.
Republicans have focused on Bill Clinton’s past friendship with Epstein, a wealthy financier who was arrested on sex trafficking charges in 2019. Epstein later committed suicide while in jail.
The Clintons claim they have already provided what little information they have, because Epstein’s crimes were terrible.
Other former presidents have testified before Congress in the past, but none have been forced to do so. Former President Donald Trump also faced a subpoena from a House committee investigating the January 6th riot, but the committee later withdrew it. Representative Comer has also said that the Oversight Committee will not compel testimony from Trump about Epstein.
Trump also had a friendship with Epstein, but has said he ended it before the accusations of sexual abuse came out.
