Lindsay Clancy, a mom from Massachusetts, is facing trial for allegedly killing her three kids back in 2023. Her lawyer says she’s still having thoughts of harming herself.
The lawyer, Kevin Reddington, was in court earlier this month for a hearing before Clancy’s trial. The trial was supposed to happen in February, but now it’s scheduled for July.
Reddington asked the court if Clancy could be taken to and from the trial in a medical vehicle instead of the usual jail van. He said this is important because of her mental state.
But the District Attorney’s Office doesn’t want her arriving in a medical vehicle. They worry it might make the jury and the public see her as a victim, instead of someone accused of a serious crime.
Reddington argued that if Clancy’s medical needs aren’t met during the trial, it could increase her risk of suicide. He even told the judge that if she hurts herself, it wouldn’t be his fault. He also said that being in a prisoner van could make her feel helpless and cause her mental health to worsen.
The judge will decide soon how Clancy will be transported to court. She’s been attending her court hearings from Tewksbury Hospital.
Clancy’s defense team plans to argue that she wasn’t in her right mind at the time of the alleged crime. They believe she was suffering from postpartum psychosis.
On January 24, 2023, Clancy asked her husband to go get dinner. When he came back, he found that she had jumped out of a window. He then discovered their three children had been strangled.
Two of the children, Cora (5) and Dawson (3), died shortly after arriving at the hospital. The youngest, Callan (8 months), died a few days later.
The defense says that Clancy had been prescribed many medications for postpartum depression in the months leading up to the incident.
Her husband has publicly forgiven her.
Prosecutors, however, claim that Clancy planned the alleged crime carefully before sending her husband out of the house.
The trial is scheduled to begin on July 20.
