President Trump Offers Aid to Cities, But Asks for Respect
President Donald Trump has made it clear: cities struggling with unrest will not receive federal assistance unless they specifically request it. In a recent statement, the President emphasized that while he is ready to help, he expects local leaders to take responsibility for maintaining order within their communities.
Trump stated he instructed the Department of Homeland Security, led by Secretary Kristi Noem, to hold back federal support from “poorly run” cities grappling with protests and riots. He emphasized that assistance would only be provided upon request.
However, the President assured the nation that federal buildings would be protected from those who seek to destroy them. He warned that anyone attacking law enforcement or damaging federal property would face serious consequences. Trump called on local and state governments to fulfill their duty in safeguarding both state and federal assets.
“You must protect your own State and Local Property. In addition, it is your obligation to also protect our Federal Property, Buildings, Parks, and everything else,” he stated. “We are there to protect Federal Property, only as a back up, in that it is Local and State Responsibility to do so.”
The President recalled the federal government’s involvement in the Los Angeles riots of last year, praising the cooperation between federal and local authorities. He urged current leaders not to hesitate to seek federal help if needed.
The June 2025 Los Angeles riots were a response to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids targeting illegal immigration. These events led to clashes with police and deployment of the National Guard.
President Trump concluded his remarks by reiterating his commitment to assisting local and state governments when they formally request it. He stressed the importance of respect and a willingness to work together to restore peace and order.
“To all complaining Local Governments, Governors, and Mayors, let us know when you are ready, and we will be there — But, before we do so, you must use the word, ‘PLEASE,'” he said.
The President’s stance reflects a belief in limited federal intervention, emphasizing the primary responsibility of local authorities in maintaining law and order. He also acknowledges the necessity of federal support in extreme cases, especially when federal property or personnel are at risk. However, he requires local leaders to acknowledge their own limitations and request aid respectfully, not demand it as an entitlement.
Critics may argue that withholding federal support punishes residents of cities facing unrest. But Trump supporters are likely to say the President is holding leaders accountable.
