Attempted Mass Shooting at Michigan Church: Suspect Identified
Authorities have named Brian Anthony Browning as the suspect in an attempted mass shooting at a church in Wayne, Michigan. Witnesses reported seeing him wearing camouflage clothing. Browning had attended CrossPointe Community Church, most recently in February.
On Sunday, June 22, police responded to the church after receiving reports of a man dressed in tactical gear grabbing firearms from his vehicle before heading inside. Browning, 31, is from Romulus, Michigan, according to a police statement.
The church’s lead pastor, Bobby Kelly Jr., revealed that Browning was the son of a woman who occasionally attended the church, even though she is not a member. Browning had attended the church a few times since last year.
Authorities noted that Browning had no previous interactions with law enforcement and did not have a criminal record. They suggested that he might have been experiencing a mental health crisis.
Witnesses described Browning as driving erratically in the church parking lot before gunshots were heard. A parishioner in a pickup truck struck him, and security personnel then engaged him outside the church. A member of the security team shot and killed Browning.
Wayne police praised the church staff for their quick actions, stating they likely saved many lives and prevented a larger tragedy. The investigation is still ongoing.
