China has recently responded strongly to accusations made by the Group of Seven (G7) industrialized nations regarding its maritime activities. In a statement, China labeled the G7’s comments as “arrogant” and “prejudiced,” characterizing them as an attempt to undermine its reputation.
The G7 had condemned China’s actions in the South China Sea, describing them as “illicit, provocative,” and a risk to regional stability. They expressed concern over China’s efforts to claim territory through land reclamation and military outposts, particularly related to its claims over Taiwan, which China regards as its own territory despite being self-governing.
In its rebuttal released from its embassy in Canada, where the G7 meeting took place, China accused the G7 of ignoring facts and interfering in its internal matters. They asserted that the G7’s statements were filled with “malicious intentions” aimed at suppressing China.
China asserts claims over the vast majority of the South China Sea, an area crucial for global trade, with tensions frequently escalating with countries like the Philippines. Although not a G7 member, China pays close attention to its global status and quickly responds to criticisms.
The country has rebuffed a ruling from a U.N.-affiliated court that invalidated its claims in the South China Sea. Additionally, China has made it clear that it considers its claim over Taiwan unyielding, stressing that they are willing to use force if necessary.
Recently, China has stepped up military activities near Taiwan and in the South China Sea, including surprise military drills that caused disruptions in civilian air traffic. The G7 acknowledged its concern about the expanding use of force and coercion in various global waters, including the South China Sea and the Taiwan Strait.
As China builds its naval capabilities, including aircraft carriers and overseas bases, the military might and maneuvers in the region continue to be a focal point for international relations. The ongoing developments highlight the importance of addressing these tensions and advocating for peace and stability in the region.
