Kansas City Chiefs Rookie Xavier Worthy Faces Legal Issues in Texas
AUSTIN, Texas — Xavier Worthy, a rookie wide receiver for the Kansas City Chiefs, has been arrested on a felony domestic violence charge, marking yet another instance of a player from the reigning AFC champions facing serious legal troubles in Texas.
According to records from the Williamson County jail, Worthy was taken into custody on Friday. He is being held on a charge of assault related to family or household members, specifically regarding an incident involving alleged choking. Williamson County includes areas of Austin, where Worthy previously played college football for the University of Texas.
In response to the accusations, Worthy’s attorneys, Chip Lewis and Sam Bassett, have asserted his innocence. They claim that the allegations were made by a woman who had been residing in Worthy’s home. The attorneys allege that she refused to leave after being asked multiple times due to her infidelity. They described the woman’s actions as “extortive efforts” that culminated in the current accusations against Worthy. The attorneys also provided details claiming that the woman caused damage to the property and physically assaulted Worthy before the police were called.
The Chiefs organization is aware of the developments and is currently taking the time to collect more information regarding the incident.
In Texas, the charge against Worthy falls under a third-degree felony related to impeding someone’s breathing, which can lead to a prison sentence of two to ten years if convicted. As of Saturday morning, Worthy had not yet posted bond, according to jail records.
Worthy was selected by the Chiefs with the 28th overall pick in last year’s NFL Draft after impressing at the combine. He quickly made a mark by scoring touchdowns in his NFL debut and ended the season with 59 receptions for 638 yards and six touchdowns, solidifying his role as a key player for the Chiefs.
This incident follows a recent history of issues among Chiefs wide receivers. Notably, fellow receiver Rashee Rice suffered a season-ending injury earlier in the season and is currently facing legal challenges stemming from a serious car accident.
These developments raise serious questions about the conduct of professional athletes and the potential consequences of their actions on and off the field. As Worthy’s legal situation unfolds, it serves as a reminder of the importance of personal responsibility and accountability, especially for those in the public eye.
