Chicago Mayor Takes Stance Against Federal Troops
Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson recently enacted an executive order that prohibits city police from working alongside the National Guard or federal agents. This decision comes in response to President Trump’s suggestion that he might deploy federal troops to the city.
Mayor Johnson stated, “This order makes it clear that our police will not be used to enforce federal directives.” He emphasized that local police will enforce state and local laws but will not participate in any federal operations, including immigration enforcement or patrols.
In his announcement, Johnson voiced concerns about preserving the safety and integrity of Chicago residents. He expressed a strong desire to avoid seeing military presence on the streets and highlighted the importance of treating all citizens with respect.
The executive order also outlines that Chicago police are to maintain their standard uniforms and identification, ensuring that they are distinguishable from any federal personnel. Johnson argued against federal military involvement, claiming it undermines local authority and could exacerbate violence.
