Former Congresswoman Liz Cheney has sharply criticized President Donald Trump, claiming he contradicts the principles championed by Ronald Reagan, America’s 40th president. She took to social media to express her concerns, stating that Trump is aligning the United States with those opposed to liberty.
In her message, Cheney emphasized that Trump’s actions, which include his support for Russian President Vladimir Putin and his stance on Ukraine, are contrary to the values of freedom that many Americans have fought to protect. “Trump’s devotion to Putin, abandonment of Ukraine, and distortion of historical facts make him the opposite of what Reagan represented,” Cheney wrote.
She warned that history would judge those who support Trump, especially those who identify as Reagan conservatives but ignore the implications of his actions. Cheney has been a longstanding critic of Trump, famously voting for his impeachment after the January 6, 2021, Capitol incident.
This exchange comes after Trump criticized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, labeling him a “dictator without elections” and suggesting he had mishandled his leadership. Trump has consistently voiced that the conflict with Russia could have been avoided and believed negotiations could have led to a better outcome.
Former Vice President Mike Pence responded to Trump’s remarks, stating that Russia initiated the war with its unprovoked invasion and emphasized that any path to peace requires a commitment to truth. Pence’s comments reflect ongoing tensions within the Republican Party regarding the U.S.’s role in the Ukraine conflict and how best to approach foreign relations in the context of national interests.
